Amar Fayaz Buriro

AI-Driven Language Engineer & Digital Humanist

Amar Fayaz Buriro is a pioneering AI-focused language engineer, computational linguist, lexicographer, and digital humanist, internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human languages, with a particular emphasis on Sindhi and other major Pakistani languages. He currently serves as Project Director at the Department of Culture, Tourism, Antiquities & Archives, Government of Sindh, where he leads strategic initiatives integrating AI, language technology, and cultural heritage preservation.

With over three decades of professional experience, Amar has been instrumental in transforming Sindhi from a traditionally preserved language into a digitally empowered, AI-ready linguistic ecosystem. His work spans Natural Language Processing (NLP), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Text-to-Speech (TTS), Speech-to-Text (STT), large-scale lexical databases, AI training datasets, and knowledge-graph-based linguistic modeling.

Artificial Intelligence & Language Engineering Leadership

Amar is the founder and Director of the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering (AMBILE), Hyderabad, a statutory institution established to advance AI-based research, development, and innovation for Sindhi and regional languages. Under his leadership, AMBILE has evolved into Pakistan’s foremost language-AI research institute, actively developing:

  • Sindhi OCR systems (the first of their kind) for historical manuscripts and archival material
  • Large-scale Sindhi lexical databases and WordNet-style semantic models
  • AI-driven TTS and STT engines for Sindhi
  • Chat-based language assistants and domain-specific AI models
  • Digitization pipelines for endangered audio, textual, and oral heritage
  • AI-assisted translation, summarization, and semantic search systems

He is also the architect of Sindh.AI, a comprehensive AI ecosystem deploying specialized assistants for language, law, culture, research, and education, positioning Sindhi as a globally accessible AI language.

Computational Linguistics & Lexicography

In 1997, Amar compiled Pakistan’s largest English-to-Sindhi dictionary, setting a national benchmark in bilingual lexicography. His lexicographic work later expanded into digital dictionaries, morphological analyzers, grammar-aware tokenization systems, and semantic tagging frameworks, now used as foundational datasets for AI model training.

He also designed and implemented language codices and encoding standards that enabled Sindhi’s seamless integration into modern computing environments.

Digital Typography & Localization Pioneer

Amar is the creator of the world’s first web-based Nastaleeq font, “Amar Nastaleeq”, and a pioneer in font engineering for RTL languages. He successfully localized global CMS platforms (WordPress, Joomla) into Sindhi and Urdu, enabling large-scale multilingual publishing long before localization became mainstream.

He has managed and architected 85+ multilingual, AI-optimized web portals, implementing semantic SEO, structured data, and multilingual accessibility at scale.

AI, Culture & Digital Heritage

As a Google Local Guide & Cultural Localizer, Amar has led initiatives in:

  • Geo-tagging heritage sites
  • 360-degree VR documentation
  • Digital tourism narratives
  • AI-powered cultural discovery platforms

His vision integrates machine intelligence with human memory, ensuring that cultural heritage is not only preserved but computationally understood, searchable, and globally disseminated.

Academic, Literary & Thought Leadership

Beyond engineering, Amar is a respected author and intellectual commentator, with 150+ published essays and analytical articles on language, technology, society, and philosophy in platforms such as BBC Urdu and Alami Akhbar. His writings explore the human implications of AI, ethical technology, linguistic identity, and cultural continuity.

Awards & Recognition

  • Latif Award (2017) — Government of Sindh’s highest cultural honor
  • Gold Medal — Sindh Graduates Association, for outstanding services to language and technology

Philosophy

Amar Fayaz Buriro is a technologist with a humanist soul; deeply committed to using AI not as a replacement for human expression, but as a multiplier of linguistic diversity, cultural dignity, and intellectual sovereignty. His work reflects a rare synthesis of engineering precision, linguistic depth, and ethical vision.
