The Sindhi Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software system was formally developed and made available for free download at the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering (AMBILE) in Hyderabad on Thursday. This Windows operating system-based software, known as AMBILE Hamiz Ali Sindhi OCR, is designed for use on computers and can be downloaded free of charge from the official website.
A ceremony marking this significant achievement was held at the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering. The event was attended by notable dignitaries including Deputy Commissioner Mr. Fuad Ghaffar Soomro, Dr. Bhai Khan Shar, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Allah Bux Soomro University of Arts and Design, and other distinguished guests.
In his address, Deputy Commissioner Fuad Ghaffar Soomro hailed the development of this software as a monumental service to the promotion of the Sindhi language. He praised the efforts of the AMBILE administration, describing their work as a tremendous boon for the new generation of Sindh. Vice Chancellor Dr. Bhai Khan Shar emphasized the software’s utility for the Sindhi language and called upon the media to help publicize this important tool.
Secretary of the Sindhi Language Authority, Professor Shabnam Gul, remarked that the creation of this software represents a significant first step toward the development and promotion of the Sindhi language.
Highlighting the software’s features, Director of the Institute, Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro, explained, “This software recognizes the contents of scanned documents and can read all Sindhi fonts except cosmetic fonts.” He added that publishing and media houses, educational institutions, universities, and online data collection researchers could fully benefit from this innovative tool.
The ceremony concluded with the formal launch of the OCR software by the distinguished guests, marking a new milestone in the digital preservation and promotion of the Sindhi language.
