Karachi, March 25, 2025. A significant academic event took place at the university’s audiovisual center, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Chair, Karachi University, and the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering, Hyderabad. This MoU aims to facilitate the exchange of research materials related to “Latifiyat.” As per the agreement, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Chair will provide all available research materials in text form to the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering.
The shared materials include encyclopedias on the life, philosophy and poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, soft copies of Shah Jo Risalo published by the Chair, copies of Ganj Sharif, and research papers from Kalachi Research Journal. This collaboration is expected to enhance the accessibility of Sindhi literary and linguistic resources through advanced language models of AI.
On this occasion, an extended lecture session was also held, featuring insightful discussions by Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro and Mr. Mukhtiar Abro. They delivered separate lectures on the topic “Hurdles in the System of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Sindhi Language.” They emphasized that in this era of information technology, the youth must play an active role in the development of the Sindhi language. They further highlighted the immense scope for integrating technology with Sindhi language advancements.
Addressing the gathering, Director of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Chair, Professor Saleem Memon, stressed the importance of language development in today’s AI era. He stated that all research materials from the Chair are being handed over to the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute to ensure wider accessibility through information technology.
The Director of Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering, Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro, expressed gratitude to Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Chair for their collaboration. He emphasized that if all institutions make their research materials available online in text form, the Sindhi language’s digital footprint will expand, addressing challenges posed by the AI era. He also shared that the institute is actively working on artificial intelligence projects related to the Sindhi language, including the development of a Sindhi language corpus and large AI models. These models are being integrated into global AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Autopilot, ensuring Sindhi language representation in cutting-edge technology.
Mr. Buriro further emphasized the need to introduce more Sindhi linguistics programs in universities. He argued that unless scientific research on linguistics is conducted within Sindhi departments, modern advancements in the language will remain limited. He urged scholars to approach linguistics from a scientific perspective rather than a purely literary one, which will enable Sindhi to gain global recognition and foster the development of new linguists.
Renowned scholar and writer Mukhtar Ali Abro also addressed the event, highlighting the significance of data in the modern era. He stressed that while technological advancements will continue, human intellect and expertise must always be valued. He encouraged the youth to step up and contribute to overcoming linguistic challenges in the digital space.
Chairperson of the Sindhi Department, Professor Dr. Naheed Memon, extended her gratitude to the distinguished guests. She shared that the department is already providing computer training to students and plans to establish a dedicated digital linguistics lab to further research efforts. Dr. Sher Mehrani hailed the research exchange as a historic milestone, making research materials more accessible to scholars. He noted that Sindhi is a rich language, requiring continued research into its extensive vocabulary.
Following the lectures, students engaged in an interactive Q&A session, where scholars provided detailed responses, equipping them with insights into the evolving technological landscape.
The event witnessed the participation of a large number of scholars, researchers, and students, including Dr. Ghafoor Memon, Dr. Rukhman Gul Palari, Dr. Sajida Parveen, Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Burfat, Dr. Sadaf Mustafa, Professor Jamila Burfat, Engineer Zubair Kalwar, Fatima Abro, Professor Zahida Raisi, Murtaza Naz, Professor Imran Bhatti, Sajjad Zaheer, Naseer Jokhio, and many others.
