(Khairpur, 5th September 2024) A one-day workshop on “Building A Sindhi WordNet: Linking Resources with Artificial Intelligence” was successfully organized by the Sindhi and Computer Science Departments of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur. The workshop was presided over by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousif Khushk, with Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro, Director of the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering (AMBILE), as the esteemed chief guest.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousif Khushk commended the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering for its significant contributions to the development of various projects aimed at empowering the Sindhi language, especially in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He acknowledged the importance of such efforts in ensuring that Sindhi remains relevant in an era of technological advancement.
Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro, Director of AMBILE, provided a detailed presentation on the significance of the Sindhi WordNet and its potential to revolutionize language processing and AI-related applications for Sindhi. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and language institutes to further develop and expand the Sindhi WordNet, which could pave the way for enhancing Sindhi’s presence in the digital world.
Mr. Buriro also shared his futuristic vision with the participants, highlighting how AI is set to bring transformative changes to human society. He stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to conserve and promote native languages like Sindhi, which holds a prestigious place as one of the oldest languages in the world. He encouraged students to explore opportunities in the field of AI for the preservation and advancement of their mother tongue.
The workshop also featured participation from key academic figures, including Prof. Dr. Ghullam Mustafa Mashori, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Prof. Dr. Javed Mahar from the Computer Science Department, Prof. Dr. Mahar from the Sindhi Department, and Professor Hassan Shaikh from the English Department. A large number of students also attended the event.
During the interactive question-and-answer session, Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro addressed various queries raised by students concerning the future development of the Sindhi language in the AI domain and other ongoing projects spearheaded by AMBILE. The workshop was a resounding success, inspiring students and faculty members alike to engage in further efforts for the preservation and promotion of the Sindhi language through innovative AI technologies.
